Drawn to the Cross: Learning from Chaim Potok’s My Name Is Asher Lev | Starting February 13-March 6, 2022

My Name Is Asher Lev, a novel by Chaim Potok, tells the story of Asher Lev, a Jewish boy who has an artistic gift that places him in tension with his strict, orthodox Jewish family and community. The discord only heightens when Asher finds himself drawn to paint images of the crucifixion. During this four-week class, we will read the novel together and discuss the themes that it raises for our Christian faith, including those of vocation, the role of art in faith, the relationship between Judaism and Christianity, and the significance of Christ’s death. All are welcome!  Join us on Sunday mornings starting February 13-March 6 from 10-10:45am in the Parlor. The class will be lead by Rev. Dr. David McNutt (Ph.D., University of Cambridge) is an Associate Editor at IVP Academic, an imprint of InterVarsity Press, and Associate Lecturer of Core Studies at Wheaton College, where he teaches courses in theology and philosophy. He is also an ordained Teaching Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and he serves as a Parish Associate at First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn.
