My Name Is Asher Lev, a novel by Chaim Potok, tells the story of Asher Lev, a Jewish boy who has an artistic gift that places him in tension with his strict, orthodox Jewish family and community. The discord only heightens when Asher finds himself drawn to paint images of the crucifixion. During this four-week class, we will read the novel together and discuss the themes that it raises for our Christian faith, including those of vocation, the role of art in faith, the relationship between Judaism and Christianity, and the significance of Christ’s death. All are welcome!
