In May of 2023, the US Surgeon General released a new Surgeon GeneralAdvisory calling attention to the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of relational connection in our country. Even before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately half of U.S. adults reported experiencing measurable levels of loneliness. Research has found that disconnection fundamentally affects our mental, physical, and societal health. In fact, loneliness and isolation increase the risk for individuals to develop mental health challenges in their lives, and lacking connection can increase the risk for premature death to levels comparable to smoking daily. As the New Testament describes the Christian community, it portrays deep and caring relationships amongst believers, that stand in stark contrast to what has increasingly become the norm in our society. This winter we will be invited to take stock of what our personal community looks like, discover what the Bible describes as healthy community, and learn how we can take steps to cultivate that kind of a community in our lives. It is critically important that we learn how to create this kind of community for ourselves, and to share this kind of community with our neighbors, friends, and nation.
God’s love for us impacts and inspires every part of our lives—our relationships, families, day-to-day experiences, and more. On the More than Sunday podcast, we will encourage, challenge, love, and listen to one another as we learn what Jesus wants for us. Come to study, connect, laugh, hope, and be inspired. Listen today on Apple, Google, Spotify, or the First Pres wesbite.
At First Pres, we live our faith through service. We love and serve in response to Christ’s call and the needs around us.
