Apostles' Creed
Jonathan Hancock, Associate Pastor for Congregational Care
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon
Leader: Jesus, you extended to us all your blessings when you announced, blessed are the poor, and blessed are the poor in spirit
People: but we have been rich in pride and elevated our comforts.
Leader: Blessed are those who mourn
People: but we have not known much sorrow for our sin and distanced ourselves from pain.
Leader: Blessed are the meek
People: but we are a stubborn and arrogant people.
Leader: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness
People: but we are filled to the full with other things.
Leader: Blessed are the merciful
People: but we are harsh and impatient.
Leader: Blessed are the pure in heart
People: but we have such impure hearts.
Leader: Blessed are the peacemakers
People: but we have not sought reconciliation as we have chosen isolation from the world.
Leader: Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness
People: but our lives do not challenge the world.
Leader: Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me
People: but we have hardly made it known that we are your children.
Leader: Your Law is holy and your benedictions are perfect, but they are both too great for us. You alone are blessed, Lord.
People: We plead with you to forgive our sins and give us the blessing of your righteousness.
Choral Anthem
For the Beauty of the Earth | by John Rutter
Jennifer Mitton-Cox, Margo Herman, Martan Walters, Sarah Morlock, quartet
Lyrics for Meditation:
For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth over and around us lies:
Lord of all to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise.
For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light:
Lord of all to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise.
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth, and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild:
Lord of all to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise.
For each perfect gift of thine to our race so freely given,
Graces human and divine, flowers on earth and buds heaven:
Lord of all to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise.
Prayers of the People and The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
Offertory
At the River | adapted by Aaron Copland
Paul Drennan, Joshua Strickler, duet
Text for meditation:
Shall we gather by the river, where bright Angel’s feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God.
Yes, we’ll gather by the river, the beautiful, beautiful river,
Gather with the saints by the river that flows by the throne of God.
Soon we’ll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace.

Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:17-21
Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Break Thou the Bread of Life | by Whitworth
Congregational Singing
Amazing Grace | American Melody arranged by Francisco Nunez
Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see.
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fear relieved.
How precious did that grace appear, the hour I first believed.
Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun,
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we first begun.
Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see.
