Church Family,
Today is “Fat Tuesday.” Hurricane drinks, plastic beads, Polish pastries, blah, blah, blah.
Let’s get to the good stuff. Tomorrow begins a experiment we are calling “Let Us Pray: A Congregational ExperiLent.” During the season of Lent, which is the 6-week period that precedes Easter Sunday, I’d like to encourage you to work with a prayer partner to invite Jesus more fully into our lives and our congregation through an experience of shared prayer.
Jesus taught his disciples how to pray. He taught them to persist in prayer, to pray together, and to ask God to have God’s way in our lives and in the world.
The specific invitation is 3-fold:
- Find a partner (if you need help with this step, let me know, I’d be happy to connect you with someone).
- Pray in person or by phone/video conference with your prayer partner 2-3 times per week from now until April 1.
- Pray for the church, pray for each other, pray for the world
The church has worked to create some resources to help you. Visit the First Presbyterian website at: http://firstpresge.org/let-us-pray/
There you will find a more detailed orientation to the experience, as well as a series of Prayer Guides to use (if you would like) when you meet with your prayer partner in person, by phone or VideoChat. Each session has some conversation prompts, a scripture passage, and a suggested prayer for your time together.
Jesus teaches us that there is power in prayer. Let’s experience that power at work in us as we make the intentional decision to invite Jesus into our shared relationships.
