Fall Sermon Series: The Way of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew

Long before followers of Jesus Christ were referred to as “Christians” they were known as adherents of “The Way.” There are multiple reasons for this. Jesus referred to himself as “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” in John chapter 14. The Gospel author Mark quotes from the book of Isaiah in the prologue of the book of Mark, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight the paths for him.” By the time we arrive at the events of the New Testament book of Acts, “The Way” is probably the most commonly used term for the Jesus movement in the First Century, as it is cited eight separate times. Likely the primary reason that Jesus followers identified with that term for themselves is that they saw their lives as a journey following the way of Jesus Christ. In this sermon series, we will study what it means to live in the way of Jesus, to be his apprentice, and to understand our lives and our world from that perspective.

Being a Jesus follower is not just a decision we make at one inflection point in our spiritual journeys. It is a way of life, guided by the Holy Spirit, following in the teachings and practices of Jesus Christ. Come discover the joy of walking in the Way of Jesus in 2022.

When Strivings Cease: Replacing the Gospel of Self-Improvement with the Gospel of Life-Transforming Grace

In this hustling, image-forward age of opportunity, we feel more anxious than ever. Despite all the affirming memes and self-reflections that dominate social media feeds, approval and worth often seem assigned to what we do rather than who we are. And we end up constantly feeling behind, lacking, and like we’re failing—at home, at work, with friends, with God. Join Wednesday Night Faith Builders as we explore how to cease our striving for something more and learn how to find freedom from the never-ending quest for self-improvement. Study guides a must, book recommended but optional. Each session will begin with an opening thought and scripture, followed by a video and discussion and ending with personal prayer requests and prayer. Register here today!

Options for ordering can be found on Ruth Chou Simon’s website, https://ruthchousimons.com/whenstrivingscease/. You will be responsible for securing the guide as well as the book (if you wish).

  • Wednesdays at 7:00p.m. in the church parlor beginning September 14th.
  • September 14th is a welcome and organizing session, the study begins on the 21st.

While grief and loss is a part of each of our life journeys, the way it hits each of us is unique. The group setting will provide you with helpful resources as we engage in the issues and process of grief, but mostly it will allow you space to talk honestly about what grieving is like for you and allow for group members to listen to and care for each other. Jonathan Hancock will facilitate the group. Please share this opportunity with others who are grieving. If you have questions or interest, please send an email to: jhancock@firstpresge.org or call the church office.
