First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn Narrative Budget 2012
At First Pres each of us is asked to make a commitment of our TIME, TALENT, and TREASURE for 2012. Pledge cards have been distributed to members by mail and will be available in the Gathering Area. Pledges can also be made on our church’s website www.firstpresge.org. Each of our individual commitments will help us, in many ways, be BETTER TOGETHER!
Stewardship in our Church
Missions and outreach energized the congregation and membership grew to 1435 in 1971. In 1974 funding began to finance the (Central DuPage) Pastoral Counseling Center. Our associate minister, Rev. Charles Alcorn III retired from his First Pres staff position and was named Director of the center when it became operational in 1976.
The 50th anniversary year (1976) was at hand and excitement was high. First Pres had grown each year , now over 1500, and the celebration theme was chosen: “50 YEARS OF GOD’S WORK”….this was Stewardship. The anniversary worship celebration was scheduled for May 16, 1976. Excitement was high as preparations unfolded. Anticipating a large worship attendance, the auditorium of Glenbard West High School was chosen as the venue. The congregation even received a congratulatory letter from the 38th President Gerald Ford. Then, “…that Sunday morning sometime between 6 and 7am, there had been a train wreck near the end of Western Avenue where one of two cars containing a toxic liquid had ruptured, and the fumes had wafted north. They (G.E. Police) told us the cloud was coming our way.” But, 50 YEARS OF GOD’S WORK was not deterred. The emergency was stabilized and we had a church service to attend. “We have to thank the Chicago & Northwestern Railway for putting an exclamation point on the 50th Anniversary.”

Stewardship in the Bible:
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” -Luke 6: 37 – 38 NIV
Church Bulletin Bloopers:
The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.
