The Apostle Paul trained a young pastor named Timothy in the necessities of shepherding a congregation. The New Testament letters of 1 and 2 Timothy are instructions from senior pastor Paul, to a young pastor-in-training, Timothy. At the close of his first letter, Paul turns to the subject of money and makes a special point to let Timothy know that Timothy cannot be an effective pastor, leader, or shepherd of a Christian congregation unless he knows some powerful truths about money. Three themes that Paul emphasizes to Timothy are: Money is an Inherently Spiritual Subject Matter; Money Gives Us a Tremendous Opportunity to do Eternal Good; Faith in Christ Compels Financial Generosity. This fall at First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn we will go to school with Timothy, under
Paul’s tutelage, and learn of the opportunity that money affords us. We will discover how these three themes are present elsewhere in Paul’s writings, and learn how a healthy understanding of money can free us to experience joy rather than fear when it comes to the financial things of life.
